Charger Works, Old Battery Died, New Won't Connect: What gives?

I have a mid-2009, refurb macbook. I've bought a brand new battery, which matches model numbers with my old battery, but the old one was 55v and this one is 60v. It is the only difference I can find.

My old battery had died completely (got about 1500 more runs on it than it was slated to have, so that was awesome). I'd been running my computer just off the charger until I could buy a new battery. I bought the new battery off of iFixIt. It arrived quickly, I put it in my computer, after resetting the SMC (on my computer I was told to turn off the computer, remove the battery, hold the power button for 3 seconds, then insert the battery, and turn on the computer—i held it for like 15 seconds), and yet the computer won't connect to the battery.

My computer either tells me the battery is [ X ]: or 0%[ = ]:, but the light on the battery itself never blinks to say, charging. The computer doesn't recognize the power source when I go into "About This Computer".

I'm not sure what to do. Perhaps there is something inside the computer not working anymore?
