A215-S7427 LCD backlight goes out, but works with external monitor.

Okay so heres my conundrum. When you turn on the laptop everything works fine and the screen comes up then it begins to flicker and eventually the back light goes off. If you close the lid and open it it comes back on for a little while then flickers and goes off again. Now at that point i thought it was a short or loose cable but heres where it gets weird.

If i plug an external monitor into the VGA port on the side both the laptop monitor and the external monitor stay on and act normal with no noticeable problems.

Does anyone have any insight into this issue?

Reading the symptoms, I would say it's an inverter problem. The confusing detail is when you say that closing the lid and opening it back fixes the problem. Maybe one of the wires in the cable that goes from the mainboard to the inverter board is cut, and that's the reason why if you close the lid an open it again the screen goes normal.

Recheck the cable that goes from the mainboard to the inverter board is correctly attached to the connectors. If it doesn't fix the issue, you can buy a new replacement cable online.
