Dell inspiron 15R N5010 laptop not starting up.

I was playing a full HD video on it. Suddenly the screen flickers one or two times and went black. The screen also went to something with green vertical stripes, somewhere in between the flickers. There was also a noise through my headset, which sounded like a motorised woodcutter. The backlight was still on. I tried everything that came to my mind with which could close the application. Nothing seemed to work. So I gave it a few minutes to close the app on its own, but didnt work. Also the harddisk activity light was completely off. I long pressed the power button, turning it off.

When I powered it on again, the power light came on and the activity light stayed on for about 2 seconds and went off. Also during that time the cd drive light blinked twice. No cd were inside it. The screen stayed off (not even the backlight). Then there was nothing. Tried a few button strokes on the wireless keyboard, but nothing happened.

My windows 8.1 audio driver already had some glitches after I installed the google hangouts Chrome app.

Can anyone tell me what could have gone wrong?

I can dissassemble the whole laptop. I've done it 6 mnths ago to change the hdd and to clean up the dirt.

Yes, the computer is with an ATI Mobility Radeon 550v, 1 GB graphics. As with external monitor, I do not have access to the system right now. It is already in the service center. They said the problem is with the graphics and needs to be changed. They said that changing the motherboard is not necessary, just the graphics chip. Could they be true? Is it possible to replace the graphics chip alone? Could it be a simple bios problem for which they are trying to charge extra?

If the laptop getting ON means ... you can connect some external monitor and post the result ... can you tell that your laptop is with graphical chip set?

from what i can find online u can change the gfx in it. i have an asus g60-jx that i could upgrade the proc and gfx if i wanted to so i know its possible if you have a chip that can be taken out, not all things are soldered onto motherboards anymore so u very well could. ps it definitely sounds like a graphics issue. i also doubt its a bios issue as u cant even see bios splash screen, which would not use windows settings, just the bare minimum of the card to render the gui.

side note i have seen some people who are good enough to even solder a new chipset on a board so anything is possible lol. hope this helps.

Yes its possible to replace... if they are experts in chip set reworking .....

max in India they will not replace new chip ... its better to replace the mother board without graphical chip set...

Definitely this is graphic card problem it won't let it on. Simply remove it from laptop and turn it on if it is working means you need to change graphic card.I knew it because i had also faced the same problem with same model laptop. Thanks.
