A way to check if dead display or dead phone?

Is there a way in which to run some kind of remote diagnostics on an iphone 5 through the cable, or can I in any other way check to see if the phone is alive underneath its dead display?

connect to itunes on a laptop and see if its recognised if it is then theres power getting to it

Thank you, cant believe I didn't think of that.

Leave it connected to iTunes for about 20 minutes just incase battery is dead as it won't detect until it's charged
