Vertical Section of touch non-responsive, not screen issue

My iphone 5s was dumped in water and damaged. I dried it, replaced battery and got it running to notice 2 problems.

- There is a vertical 0.5" left section of the screen that when touched it responds in wrong areas (to left and right). So vertical scrolling works, but touching specific keys "s", "e", "d", and "z" area does not.

-Flash is not working. Not that big of issue.

Of course I thought it to be the digitizer and replaced the entire screen, but the same touch issue with brand new screen.

Any other ideas? Could there be a short? Can I repair?

This is almost certainly oxidation on one of the digitizer pins. Reflowing that pin will solve. You could try DIY with the smallest soldering iron tip you can find, but test first before heating the iron to see if you can get the clearance you need without melting the plastic part of the digitizer connector, or adjacent connectors. If so, add flux then heat the iron and touch it to the black oxidized areas under magnification.

Or send it out for repair--click my iFixit Pro store name if you need a professional.

Hi jessa,

Thanks for your response. Which connector is for the digitizer. I noticed a lot of black in the connector as in the photo and tried myself adding flux and the results aren't too pretty.

I have uploaded a photo for your inspection. https://flic.kr/p/pnTNtR

Am I working on the right connector? I may need professional as you can see my tip is too big for this job.

Ouch. Ok, now I regret trying not to be 'spammy' and strongly suggesting you just send it out in the first place.

1.) Pull the black sticker so you can really see what is going on.

2.) No that is not the right connector---that connector looks mangled and will need replacing now if you want to have a front camera function.

3.) The other similar connector is the digitizer connector---see the little bit of black you have there? Just a tiny smidge--this is all the trouble was with your screen. A quick little kiss with an iron and flux (with the sticker gone) would have solved.

4.) That iron tip may be beyond saving--it has to be bright and shiny to make the solder flow where it should. That tip is heavily oxidized and shouldn't be used for repair.
