Hard Drive Replacement, trouble installing OS

Greetings, I recently decided to do some work on a MacBook Air 2008 model for a friend.. I've replaced the main battery without issues. Also his hard drive was starting to go bad and during a verification the samsung SMART detection alerted me that the drive was failing. Thus leading to my replacing the hard drive... The actual hardware exchange didn't seem difficult went smooth.. However when I attempt to install OS X Lion by selecting the USB drive from the boot menu, I recieve a grey screen with a probation symbol.. And the computer power cycles after a minute..

The unknowns:

Is OS Lion compatible with this version or should I install snow leopard?

I tried the USB on my MacBook Pro 2012 without issue..

Is it worth the time to reinstall the hard drive to see if there is am issue with the new?

Should I make a boot disk of hirens to test hardware?

I've run out of ideas for this laptop. The computer ran fine prior to the HD swap.. Only reason for replacing the battery, was the original had swollen and raised the keyboard etc...

Let me know

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

What are you trying to do the install from? Did you remember to format the new drive before trying to install a system?

Install was being attempted from an 8gb USB drive, and wouldn't boot the drive... Reading what Machead had mentioned, I think he is on to something and I will be making an attempt tomorrow afternoon with his suggestions in mind.

What your seeing is the symbol that says "Can not boot from this System Folder"

This system can run the last version of OS X 10.7 "Lion." However, although it has a 64-bit processor, it has a 32-bit EFI and is not capable of booting into 64-bit mode. It does not support "OpenCL" either. Please also note that OS X Lion is not capable of running Mac OS X apps originally written for the PowerPC processor as it does not support the "Rosetta" environment.

If your USB install is set up for 64bit mode there's your answer. That's probably why it works fine on the '12 MBP.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.
