Unexpected shutdown on battery power

My computer is shutting down unexpectedly while on battery power only. The computer reports the battery is functioning properly, but it obviously is not. Apple store will fix everything wrong with the computer for $280. I think replacing the battery will fix the problem. I don't really want to invest $280 into repairing a four year old laptop, but I might be willing to spend $100 and replace the battery myself. How can I find out if the battery is really the problem? Can a battery fail in such a way that it just loses power randomly while reporting anywhere from 5% to 99% charge?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Has the machine been dropped or pressed (had things stacked on it, squished in some carrier?)

I had an MBA with a cracked battery, because some idiot tried to stuff their luggage on top of my messenger bag in an overhead aircraft compartment. It acted just the way you describe. Sometimes it would work fine, then suddenly it wouldn't charge, or boot. or would shutdown, then again it would magically work fine for a while.

Battery looked fine until I removed it, and could see a hairline crack in it. I was lucky it didn't cause a fire!
