Won't shut off, can I proceed?

I'm getting ready to replace the dock connector in my iPhone 4S because the phone won't power off. (You can shut it off but it immediately reboots.) The first instruction for replacing the dock connector is "Make sure your phone is shut off.' Since I can't shut it off, how should I proceed? (I also intend to replace the battery.)

Answer this question I have this problem too

Disconnect the battery and I'm pretty sure it will stay off.

Yes, I'm pretty sure you're right. But even the instructions for changing the battery emphasize making sure the phone is off before you open it up. I'm just wondering, if I open up the phone while it is on, under the circumstances are there things I should be concerned about before I get the battery disconnected. Don't want to fry my phone doing something stupid.
