A slow boot up issue is most likely HD related. Not sure I understand your need to disconnect the optical drive here.

First I would create a bootable external drive (HD or thumb drive). Then restart your system running off this external drive. Now you should be abler to run Disk Utilities to check your HD. You may want to make a backup of your data (in both the Mac OS and Windows environments each is unique) just in case.

Older systems HD's also tend to get fragmented. You'll need to run a defrag app like Drive Genius. If your disk has unrecoverable errors the drive maybe ready to fail. You may want to think about if the investment into this system is worth it Vs getting a new system.

Same thing happens to me. I also have my optical drive taken out. Can it be the reason?

I don't think it is because of the HD, as it just a grey screen taking a long time. Once it get the black windows screen, it boots very fast.

I also have MBA 2009 and it is not a problem there.

That sounds like a fragmented drive issue get Drive Genius as I explained above and setup an external drive to boot up from. Then you can fix your drive.

Taking out the optical drive doesn't help here. Hopefully you didn't do that as you could have used a burnt a bootable CD/DVD to boot up from as an option (instead of the thumb drive). If you have a dual drive setup you'll want to rethink it as this can also be an issue. The problem is some models have a slow optical drive port (ESDI or a slower SATA port than the HD port).
