No imei, blank baseband iPhone 5 water damage.

I have a problem with a iphone 5 that had water damage.

The iPhone worked fine no problem at all. The only problem it had was making calls. When you made a call you couldnt hear the person or the person couldnt hear you. audio IC problem i think.

So i have opened the shield cleaned the logicboard with isopropanol. After that i made a call and it worked.

So i closed the iphone but after that the problem came back.

Cleaned the logicboard again and put the phone together, i wanted to test the phone, but phone stopped reading sim. I noticed that imei was gone and baseband was blank.

Did some research and could be the U601_RF baseband power supply failure.

I marked where there was corrosion

also a resistor of conductor is been missing from the logicboard.

what kind of component is the missing one ?

With the missing component the sim has been read, and also the live call were successfull.

I want to know how i can troubleshoot which component i need to fix these problems. I have micro soldering experience and the right tools to do this repair.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

iOzzy, okay so the corrosion was around the touchscreen IC, should not interfere with your baseband. The missing part is reference designator C357 which is a 10UF 6.3V 20% capacitor in a 0402 package. It is part of the power management circuitry and should be replaced. check on U601_RF and may be a reflow would work.

thank you for your information oldturkey 03.

As i can see, there 2 pads holding the missing capacitor on its place.

1 of them has no pads on the logicboard, it has been ripped of. tomorrow i have better view on the logicboard with a microscope.

Can i replace this capacitor from a another iphone 5 logicboard ?

i will try to reflow the U601_RF and see what happens then. I will let you know, thanks in advance.

OR shall i try reflow after i have changed the missing capacitor ?

I'd change the capacitor first. Let us know what you find under the microscope.

I cleaned the pad on the missing capacitor's place. 1 of the 2 pads were gone so i cleaned the other one. put some soldering iron on it and now its clean.

unfortunately i dont have that capacitor right now to solder to his place. I will get a another iphone 5 logicboard to pull out the missing capacitor.

Will the imei and baseband number come back after i replaced the missing capacitor ?

What i also noticed is that the U601_RF is glued. Can i just reheat the chip or must i remove the glue first ?

both of the missing components are capacitors.

everything should work fine even without them.

Like said before - check U601_RF.

it´s a memory for BB

Im working on a iPhone 5 with same symptoms, but not water damage. Phone was dropped.

This problem is U601--must be replaced, not re flowed. It is a glass ic and has a dependence on another big ic that also must be replaced at the same time. Few people are capable of this work.

Video before is for an ID lock, then You would have to replace all 3 of these chips.

In case You would want to replace only U601_RF -- you would have to replace rest of 2 chips. (BB and NAND)

U601_RF is a memory chip. It can be reflown. When U601_RF is removed - it will leave like a small platform under it. - glue residue. Do not take this off. You will rip the pads off. just flux, drag over the contacts with fresh solder, and put IC back.

I would start with removing U601_RF, like I described in my previous post. (Remove glass IC, but dont clean the glue under the IC. Just flux it and swipe over with fresh solder. Same on IC.)

then solder the IC back.

also -- if the U601_RF is damaged - you would have to do exactly as in the video I posted before.
