How do I repair the white screen on my iPhone 3G?

I dropped my iPhone and the screen is now all white. The phone still connects to my Mac and I can answer calls (since I know where the slider is), so I think the digitizer still works.

When repairing my phone, do I only need the 3G display? Are there other parts I should consider buying?

Thanks!

I would first try to reset the iPhone - press and hold the home button and the power button at the same time until the iPhone restarts - if you're lucky - it will work again.

if not - it could be the display connector that needs to be reseated

use the display assembly guide to open the iPhone and check the connectors - but be careful - if you short the contacts of the connector, the coil for the backlight could be damaged - so removin the battery would be a good idea

I tried a reset, still having an issue. I hadn't even thought about checking the connections first.

I'll track down some spudgers and take a look.

Thanks!

I have seen this issue many times as i've repaired plenty of iphone 3g's. The main cause of this is from the impact of the fall related directly to the mother board.

Generally if you replace the LCD with a fully functional and tested LCD and you still get a white or flickering screen it means that the FPC Connector on the mother board has been damaged from the impact of the fall. The FPC connector is the part where the LCD is plugged into the mother board.

The FPC connector can be replaced but it is not an easy task, it requires patience and precision and working knowledge of soldering.

Check the connection is home for the LCD. i find disconnecting, blowing in both the connector tab and port then placing the connector squarely on top of the port and pushing down firmly usually does the trick.

If that doesn't work it may be that they are different versions/models of LCD? remove the LCD and check it against the old one, they usually have a (model) number printed on the back.

Update

Also make sure you hard reset the unit by holding both the power and home button until it reboots.

I have also had some issues around a white screen. One point that has been made in one of the youtube videos is that connecting a new lcd to the logic board whilst it is still powered up will not resolve a white screen issue - the board has to be powered down when connecting the screen, digitizer and earphone connectors. Be careful to power down before connecting the new lcd.

My screen on iPhone 3GS also went completely white after installation. I used the reset method (holding the power button and home button together for 5-10 seconds). This reset my phone perfectly and it's working fine. Try this before reopening.

My phone does that , and my lock screen is broken .

If you blow in the bottom where the charging port is , it will fix it .

I know it sounds stupid and ridiculous , but it works ..

more often than not, the white screen issue is not "hardware" based. It may be, but try a from "firmware" rebuild and see if that helps. No guarantees but if you have already tried everything else I would suggest it as my wife's was having this issue and it seems to have solved the issue. That being said, I did change out my wife's battery and after a few "don't use the 3g parts on 3gs!" mishaps the firmware rebuild was the one thing that resolved the last (white screen) issue.

Only use this as a solution of last resort, but it worked for me. Many iphone issues on the 3gs have a "white screen" symptom but 3 or 4 times a rebuild from saved firmware fixed the issue.

I changed the glascover of my iPhone because it was broken. After putting the new one on, all I had was a white screen display.... :s Till I found out that the connectors from the lcd display were damaged, so I had to replace the lcd, too. After that, my phone was working like in the good old times again.

Hi,

I have also had the white screen of death.

Here is my story...

Last week I dropped my iPhone 3GS.

It slipped out of my pocket while I was sitting on the couch.

I have dropped my phone before, but it is (or I should say was) in pretty good condition. You wouldn't know that it had been dropped, let's put it that way, no scratches no dents or cracks.

My phone fell approx 10 inches.

Right away I knew something was wrong, there was a popping type sound. I picked up my phone and tried to turn it on. The screen was white. I tried to turn it off but couldn't. So I force quit it. I then couldn't get it to turn back on. I was so mad at myself, but mostly just really really sad.

I scoured the internet for answers and came up with a few, button fixes this and that.

I took my phone apart, I mean I took off the digitizer and LCD, I also took out the logic board. I then put it all back together. Guess what? it worked! It came back on it synced with my mac and it all seemed good. The battery had been completely drained, even though when it fell it was just over 90% charged. I kept it plugged into the computer and it charged up to 100%, I then unplugged it, used it and all was good, everything seemed to work fine, I could make calls, receive calls, texts pictures, videos etc.

My next test, turning the handset off then back on.

It failed that test. I then kicked myself, why turn it off I had it working!

I tried what I had just done and again took the phone apart and put it back together. No good, all I had was a white screen.

I tried to clean the connectors. No good just a white screen.

I tried my daughters LCD. No good, her LCD went white, I by now was bricking it thinking I'd now messed up 2 iphones, when I put her LCD back in her phone it worked! I was so happy.

It didn't stop me putting my screen in hers though. No good, all I got was a white screen. I then put her screen back in. Her screen was now white as well!! That however was fixed with a reset (home and sleep combo). So I hadn't screwed her phone as well.

Well I ordered a new screen on the off chance. No good just a white screen UNTIL I did a reset with the new screen in place. Home and sleep combo, guess what? It is now working!!!

So I am assuming after changing the LCD for a new one that you still have to do a force quit due to the phone still actually being on when you take the front off.

I can't guarantee that this fix will work for everyone, but it did work for me. So try it it just might work for you as well.

Good luck

Can you please tell how to force quit?

by

I think he means holding home and power button at the same time for 10 seconds. This makes the iphone reboot, you should see the apple logo appear and you can release the 2 buttons and allow iphone to reboot. This works for many problems on iphones and is a good first line to repair..frozen apps, white screen, sound problems etc.

Hi,

One thing to check if you change the LCD an digitizer is that all the connections are on securely. After ingot my screen fixed and working, the sensors weren't working right, do the backlight wasn't going off when I was on a call. So i had to open my phone back up again and fix the problem. Make sure to use twizzers to get the sensor in and don't forget to push the clip down! (I don't remember which number it's labeled but it's the one that goes from the LCD to the phone with the little gold connectors on the tip). After you replace the screen and digitizer and your phone is back together hold the home button and the power button down to 'force quit' This trick worked to get the new screen working, as it didn't work the first time I changed it. After this I had a perfect new screen, no more white screen of death and a big smile on my face!

Hope this helps,

Kathy

See Another reviewer (HELLRAZOR) said to press the phone in the bottom left of display. This, after holding the reset keys (both home button and power off button), worked! Good stuff.

I think perhaps the display can come loose and simply pressing this area reconnects the phone's internal components. But then again, I am not an expert and share my luck after reading HELLRAZOR's suggestion. The white screen is gone after at least three hard reboots (holding two buttons mentioned above). The key was to press the lower left screen.

ODD, but TRUE! Thanks!

Hold the on/off power button with the home button and let it hard reset. When it turns off just simply press on/off power button again to turn on and it should fix.

The white screen is caused by broken resistors close to the ribbon cable. I know because i fix this problem every day.

Off the top of my head, I would say you have a 65%-70% chance that a white screen is just the LCD assembly and replacing it will resolve the issue.

The other possibility is that the connector on the board is also damaged and it's questionable if it could be repaired or your willing to take the chance that jimmy rigging the connector piece is worth your money knowing it might fully break shortly after.

White screen is usually indicator of the flex cable connection from a) ribbon to board or b) ribbon to LCD having it's "teeth" shifted. It's too sensitive of a part to realign and you just hope it's not on the board.

Our company buys back broken LCD screens and phones from repair centers here in the US and we've had hundreds like this.

Well, you have tried a hard reset, you have tried restoring. I wonder if you are damaging these LCDs when you are removing them. The cable that connects the LCD to the main board is extremely sensitive and if you bend or twist it the wrong way you can kill the LCD.

One other possibility is that the LCD itself is damaged. Here is my story...

Just like many others here, I dropped my phone. it is in a semi-protective case, but the phone landed flat on its back. Immediately got the white screen. Efforts to reset, DFU restore, home-vol up-power, or whatever did not work. I had another 3gs here that my wife used prior to getting her 4s. Anyway, I swapped screens, and it worked great on my phone. Problem was that the digitizer was bad and the far left column was unresponsive (this was a known issue with this screen). So for S.N.G. I decided to swap her LCD onto my digitizer, and when I took the lcd out of my digitizer, I noticed a curved crack running from the top center curving down to about the top left third of the screen. this crack was imperceivable while under the digitizer glass. Anyway, once I got the LCD's swapped I installed it into my phone and now it works great, flawlessly actually. Anyway, I hope this helps.
