Before I swap HD to 3TB Seagate, what should I do first?

Have an exsternal 2tb HD that i use for time machine. The hard drive has failed as I see has the death wheel for hours. Bought machine from a Mac store but NO start up disk 10 OS have added OS snow lepord and worked great. would rather look dumb and ask the questions, before things go wrong: 1st format new HD first. to what format? with what? snow lepord disc or exsternal HD? These PC are weird to work on.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

First put an operating system on the external drive so you can boot from it. If you added Snow Leopard you must have bought a retail disk. If so, it has Disk Utilities on it to format the new hard drive. Give the drive one partition (this sets it up as GUID format. Then erase using Mac OS extended (Journaled). If the new drive is a 6 GBs it may have to be jumpered down to 1.5 GB/s, or just check to see if it compatible with 1.5 GB/s before buying.
