MacBook Pro A1226/1260 backlight is not working, post repair?

I'm at my wits end here. I have two MacBook Pros (One a Mid 2007, the other a early 2008). The mid 2007 has a failed backlight (seemingly the LED driver board), the 2008 *was* fine.

After getting absolutely nothing on the 2007 after ordering and installing a new LED driver board, I decided to take a chance and pull the display off the known-good and known-working 2008 MBP. Connected it up, and, well, nothing. Clearly, this problem must be deeper than I thought.

Imagine the look on my face when I put the 2008's display back in its rightful place, and lo and behold, the backlight no longer comes up. At all. Even with an SMC reset.

The 2007 MBP has pretty much been officially written off by its owner, so I no longer care about that one so much. What I do care about now however is the 2008 model, as that one sees daily use. What could be causing the display to no longer come up? Is it possible the 2007 somehow blew out the LED driver board or something?

I don't know where I should begin to look as far as getting it back to full working order. I'd order a new LED driver board but I want to make sure that's actually what went wrong. I sadly have no known good ones hanging around, so I can't test.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Connect an external monitor and see if you get anything. Let us know what the last four digits of your computers serial number are.

As I replied to mayer, I sadly don't have the serial handy, but it's a model A1260 (15" MBP early 2008) with the 512MB 8600M GT. If I connect it to an external monitor I do get video, and I also get video on the internal display, just no backlight. If I pull the metal lid off of the display and aim a spotlight at the back of the screen, I can see the desktop and such.

You need to check these machines to see if they have the nVidia 8600 GPU. This is a very well known issue. If you don't know how just give us the last four figures of the machine serial numbers and we can tell you.

The 2008 was actually seen for the GPU defect, and should be fine. The only issue is the LED backlighting which is no longer functional. The computer works wonderfully if I shine a light on the display, or I connect it to an external monitor. The 2007 MBP I'm not so sure about.

As for a serial number, I don't have one handy. :( I remember off the top of my head it being the Early '08 15", with the 8600M GT/512MB. Manufactured in February 2008, I believe. Model number A1260.
