Why won't my iPhone 4S turn on unless it is plugged in?

I have a black iPhone 4S that will only turn on if it is plugged into either the mains or the computer. After reading various forums on the net I came to the conclusion that it was either the battery or the dock connector, so I replaced them both! After replacing both the dock connector port and the battery the same problem is still occurring.

Will Waplington, "unless it is plugged in" points toward a bad battery or loose battery connector. Double check the connections. Check for any missing components around the battery connector and use a multimeter to check the voltage (with the phone plugged in) on the battery connectors and see what you get. If all that checks out, replace the battery once more. It is possible that you have a battery that is discharged below its charging threshold. Hope this helps, good luck.

I had this issue today. On this phone, the customer had purchased the wrong battery cover, so he "modified" the tabs to make the cover fit. The phone would come on if he squeezed on it. He stated that it works fine when it is inside a case.

Any chance you're using the wrong cover?
