Can I reboot my mac without the OS CD?

I have just switched out the HDD in my mac book. I don't have the original OS CD (I'm in the US, it's in the UK...) and I was wondering if there is anyway around this?

When I switch on the mac book, I get a grey screen, followed by a flashing folder icon, then the laptop powers down after a few minutes.

I recently upgraded to OS 10.9.4 through the apple website.

Put the OLD HD in and external case (unless it's thrashed). Boot from the external... at boot the computer should automagically detect and choose it as a boot volume... If that doesn't happen you can hold the Option Key down at boot and you should get a screen that allows you to manually choose that drive as the boot volume.

Once booted clone to the new drive.

Problem solved.

If the old drive is so damaged you can not boot from it then contact APPLE UK and get them to mail you a replacement OS CD.
