Why is my screen display dark when the power is on?

I can hear the fan running and see the lights when I boot up but I can't see anything on the screen (it's black).

Options

There are several possibilities:

1) A failing graphics card.

2) Your screen cable has been disconnected.

3) Your brother placed a sheet of black paper on the screen to mess with your head.
