Upgrade for iPad 1st generation

I had an iPad version one and I've noticed that a lot of apps now require software which you can't get available on that version of the iPad such as the most recent version of iOS.

Is there a way of either downloading an upgrade for this or installing new hardware which will allow me to do this rather than buy a new iPad?

You're pretty much out of luck as Apple considers this a legacy machine. To find the APPS available do a search for "iPad legacy APPS". I ended up giving mine to my youngest granddaughter.

You can try jailbreaking but to be honest the low amount of RAM in the 1st Gen iPad is what holds it back from running newer, more memory intensive apps.

Well that's not really correct. It's the processor and the lack of willingness for developers to try to support this model.
