Display randomly inverted, inverter problem?

Hi everyone !

I want to sell my old MacBook Pro Penryn (Feb.2008 : MB133*/A), to buy a worthy successor.

But I have too much problem to sell it, in the current state, it is not really usable.

But I think it's not a big problem.

In fact, when I move the screen in certain positions, the colors are reversed, like this :

And if I move it again it's ok :

I have completely disassembled the mac, tried to put the cables in places, check the connections, but nothing works.

Do you think it is a simple and inexpensive repair to do ?

Thanks a lot !

Does it happen when you do not move the screen as well? Does it happen randomly or only when moved?

Cool effect ;-}

No, the inverter does not invert the video signal only the power to increase it for CFL's that offer the backlight of this model.

Sadly, your GPU it the culprit here, NVIDEA had a bad run of GPU chips. Apple had an extended warranty on your system were that swapped out the logic board. But that was a few years ago. It's time to think about a new system or locate a good logic board to swap yours for.

Thx for the answer.

I have already benefited from this replacement program, so my logic board is almost new :)

I really thought about a cable problem because, by having my computer on a table, I can reproduce the problem by simply moving the screen by the axis, without touching anything else.

If you really think moving the lid changes things, you could try replacing the LCD display unit as the only other place I could think of that could create a similar effect would be the drivers on the back of the LCD glass. I've not seen it were the whole display turned as yours has only a section (top or bottom).

There is actually a feature built into OSX to invert the display colors. The default key short-cut is CTRL + ALT OPTION + COMMAND + 8

While this isn't a solution it may make the laptop easier to use. I'm with oldturkey03, that it is more likely to be a damaged cable. To isolate your problem, I would recommend hooking it to an external display and see if it will discolor. If it does, it is a logic board related problem. If not, then you've narrowed it down to an internal display issue. My 2007 MBP display turned into a strobe light, when connected to another display it too flicked and flashed just as the internal display had, indicating GPU failure over display failure.

Julien, if you can reproduce the error by moving the screen, a failed GPU is less likely. I suggest to check the integrity of the display cable and would suggest a replacement.

Was watching a movie on my MacBook Air and all of a sudden my friend turns on the light in my room, and my MBA screen just inverts and starts to flicker. It's been two days now and it has made completely devastated.. any help please? Tried everything possible though . Even tried to invert it again and it gives me nothing but the dim screen.

First you'll need to get an electrical in to fix your light switch as it likely killed your system!

Sadly, you may need a new logic board. See if an external monitor works if it does your display is bad otherwise it's the logic board.
