Replace (left) clutch hinge and/or clutch cover?

Hi there,

My MacBook A1342 (late 2009) Core 2 Duo 2.26 is falling apart here and there, causing it to not close properly. See the following pictures:

What do you think could be the problem? Is it maybe the left clutch hinge? Or only the clutch cover? Something else?

Thank you,

Alice

It looks like you have two issues here:

  • The left hinge is clearly loose and in fact the screws could have completely fallen out WARNING! You should stop using your MacBook and not turn it on (remove the battery). A loose screw can short across something causing more damage.
  • The clutch cover is also damaged and needs to be replaced as well.

Both can be fixed. You'll need to remove the display to replace the clutch cover. Follow this IFIXIT guide MacBook Core 2 Duo Clutch Cover Replacement. But before you go to deep after you get to the end of Step 12 jump to Steps 33 & 34 to see if the hinge screws are still present and tight on the body side, then go back and pick up from Step 13. If you find the hinges were still secured tightly the LCD frame screws will need to be located and tightened up. I would put some fingernail polish (clear) on the screw threads to help prevent them loosening up again.
