water damage, hard drive replacement, help.

I have spilled water on my Macbook Pro 2009 about 3 weeks ago. I need to try to keep all of my stuff from that computer because i have a lot of projects on it. However my friend had a macbook pro just sitting around it is the same model because she could never get it to go past the apple logo screen. Is it okay to to switch the hard drives out I should also mention that the mac i have my stuff on has the updated software and i believe the one my friend had still has snow leopard. Will that be okay or is that something I shouldnt even try since like i stated earlier I need to try to keep all my files from my macbook.

Put your HD in an external case. That way when you find a functioning machine you can retrieve your data. Without knowing more about the second machine or even what version of X was on either machine the best thing to try is connect the external drive and hold the option key while booting the second machine.

If your HD appears choose it and try to boot.

If your HD appears with the universal NO (/) symbol the version of X you have won't boot the other machine.

If the second scenario occurs you need to find/buy a newer Mac to access your data.

Now you know why keeping a current backup is important. BTW you don't need to backup Apps (that requires a lot of room, or time over network) you just have to backup data (text, images, whatever files you use as work, or deem important). And, if the stuff is really, really important (Thesis papers, or tax information - something that's a real PITA to recreate) have three copies and keep one off site. If you have a break-in or fire and all your backups are in the same place as your computer... they'll be gone too.
