MacBook Pro wont start?

Hi.

So a few days ago my 3-year old Macbook all of a sudden shut down, and now it won't start!

I've tried replacing the battery and the charger. The battery LED indicators does light up and shows full. I've also tried reseting the SMC.

The weird thing is the two times I took my battery out and then reconnected it again, it started for about 10 seconds, but then shut down again.

Does anybody know what is wrong with it? Thanks.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

If you recently "upgraded to Mavericks" or are beta testing Yosemite it could be software related. Another likely possibility is a failing or corrupt hard drive.

You could try a repair boot, or a safe boot and see if that accomplishes anything. If you can't boot from a different volume it would point to hardware on the machine.

If you had the machine open before the problem initiated it could be a reassembly issue.

Thanks. I tried repair boot and safe boot, but the macbook still wouldnt start. And it can't be a reassembly issue either..

The false restart is because by removing the battery you've reset the PRAM. When that happens the machine starts to boot until the POST (power on self test) detects what ever issue you're having it turns the computer off to keep you from starting a fire, or really damaging the machine further. That information is written into PRAM and so until you manually flush it by removing all power it stays there. You seem positive it's not a reassembly issue - if that's true then it's a logic board damage issue. Run an APPLE HARD WARE TEST from your install disks or, if you're running Lion or a latter version of X, Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears.

Thanks, i ran the hard ware test and it said everything was ok. Any ideas on what to do now?

So the hardware test (was it from a disk or from a partition on your main drive?) worked fine... That says HD problems to me... the test OS/partition/drive was not affected but your main HD is. If it's only software reformatting the drive (loses you all your data & apps) reinstalling the OS should solve the problem. If the problem continues it again points to a failing or damaged drive and replacing it should be the solution.

Thanks again. The hardware test was not from a disk. But how am I going to reinstall the OS when the macbook just shuts down? I tried holding the command and R keys, but it just shut down after about a minute..
