Water damaged 5s, what should I do?

Hello,

I accidentally dropped my phone down a 15 ft pool. Knowing that it had a lifeproof case on i didn't panic that much but when i got it out of the water i checked for water damage. (such as open the sim tray look for the liquid indicators) Everything checked out, the indicators were white and my phone was functioning. There was even phone signal, Wifi, bluetooth everything. Then as the day passed i noticed my phone's signal started to drop until it displayed "no service" and the back part started to become hot to the touch. I turned it off after i noticed this symptoms. Now my question is what should i do? What's the best possible way to fix my phone? (without going to a repair shop) I have no experience with opening up phones but i'm willing to learn. Please help.

mark, The very first thing you want to do is to not try to restart the phone. This may further damage your phone. You also do not want to try to charge it any further. The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using these guides. Once it is disassembled, you do need to clean it properly. You will need high grade isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush. Use this guide to see how to clean it. Even so it was written for a 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. While you are cleaning it, check for any broken, missing or burned looking components. When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate. It is possible that your symptoms are related to corrosion. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you for the information and your help. I was able to clean the components that were damaged. Reassembled it and my signal was back! Though should i still replace the battery as you have stated?

I would since you are already there. That way you know that it will be working without any trouble later on.

If you have no experiance I would bring to a shop to get fixed asap the faster it's looked at the better it needs completely striped of all it's parts and washed with ISO alcohol

Thank you for the reply! But may i ask if you can assess how severe the damage is based on the symptoms i have stated above?

Tbh it's hard to say as water damage is so hard to troubleshoot best thing is to get it cleaned out and assess the damage if it turns on

Will apple cover the phone even though the three liquid indicators are white? I opened it up earlier to find out if my phone's indicators were red and was shock to see that they're all white.

If all the water damage indicator (LSI) are white, take it back to Apple for a warranty repair.

That kinda depends on whats been touched/done to the insides of the phone. I have opened/closed a couple of iPhones and taken them back to the apple store and they never knew the difference - I got replacements each time. It may also depend on the "expert" you see. I had one where they were convinced a part was different inside so decided it was void of warrenty, I then took it back another time after opening the device again, giving it a clean up and then returned to the store and got it replaced no worries!

may i ask what did they notice that was different?

Sorry, cant comment but can post an answer in reply.

They said there was a different looking sticker on one of the parts. I simply took it off.
