Mac died: 3 beep at start, black screen

Hi all.

I've a 2011 imac 27. Due to the tipical dimming display problem, I've opened my mac to change the display.

I have experience with computer assembly and I know what I do but during the last period I have run out of luck.

Opening the imac I also changed the cpu with an i7 2600 instead of my i5 2500, and added an SSD.

Reassembled all the imac won't start: black screen and 3 beep from the speaker... Silence, 3 beep... Silence 3 beep.

I've tried to re-change the cpu with the i5: same situation.

Tried with the ram, change position, change modules: same situation.

Removed the ssd: same situation.

What's wrong?

Please help...

This usually indicates a RAM issue. I would try just one stick of the original RAM.

I've tried to put the original cpu but it's the same situation. Ram is original, tried to reseat with no luck.

Today I'll look to the cpu socket to see if something is wrong with it...

Referring to the information about the tone at startup, I tried to start without ram inside. It should plays one tone but it simply doesn't start.

I made other test, came out a problem of the DIMM SLOT A... both slot create problem with a DIMM installed ... I have to use the SLOT B... looking the logic board there's no sign of scratch or similar... very strange...

Sometimes the slots go just partially bad and will work with a lower GB stick if you have one. The maximum RAM in this machine is 32 GB. So you could try a 16GB, a 8 GB or a 4 GB stick in the good slot and have plenty.

Mayer, FTW! Chalk this one up under stupidity. I forgot to put the DIMMs in. DOH!

Looking at the CPU chips did you by chance damage one or more of the pins?

I would put back your original CPU back in and disconnect both HD & SSD devices to see if it is still erring. Also check your other connections.

Try doing a SMC reset it's possible the CPU identifier held in CMOS is messing you up. Again, lets go back to the original CPU and pull the HD & SSD for now to see if you can get to the blinking ? mark.
