Entire touch screen totally unresponsive on right side of phone.

Hello,

I dropped my iPhone 5 last night with no cosmetic damage to the phone or screen. However, I noticed two vertical white lines and the entire right side of the touch screen is unresponsive. I cannot access certain apps, edit settings, access voicemail archive screen, save alarm clock settings, etc. I did some research and read it may be the digitizer cable, but how do I successfully know if that is the cause? Will replacing the LCD display solve the problem? Please help, I would really like to be able to use my phone again!

Thank you so much,

:(

Hi Stella I have the exact same problem with my iPhone 5. Can you kindly update if you got it resolve and if so how? Thanks in advance.

Hey there! So it was in fact a damaged screen and I ended up replacing the screen with the ifixit kit successfully. I watched the ifixit video a million times and eventually managed to fix the screen perfectly. One thing to note. Be very careful not to strip the tiny screws. That made it much more difficult for me and took me an hour longer to get the parts replaced. There are videos on the internet that help you how to work with tiny stripped screws so don't lose hope if it does happen to you. Another thing to note is I prefer the ifixit replacement screen (it is a bit pricier), but there are a couple of pre-assembled parts on the replacement lcd screen that reduces the process (ie camera housing port pieces are already attached to the replacement screen vs. having to reuse the housing ports from your original phone). The reason why I mention this is because those pieces are very, very small and hard to put back. I hope this all made sense and hope everything works out for you!

Thanks Stella. I just dropped my 5S and have the same issue. I can't even get into the phone because one of the numbers on the 'dead' side won't enter for my code. I'll try changing the screen. Mine is only about three weeks old and I died inside when this happened.

I'm having the exact same problem. Do you have a link to the exact kit you bought to fix it pls? And was it 5s?

It's most likly a damaged screen and a new one will fix it

But you can open it up and make sure the connectors are plugged in correct but I'm 99% sure this isn't the case

No problem please update us

I forgot to update you. So my issue was in fact a damaged screen. I was able to successfully replace the lcd screen even though I encountered a stripped screw. That made my process take so much longer, but I eventually figured it out and now I have a working screen again!

how much does it cost to replace lcd screen

by

Depends. If you just cracked the glass, probably $20-30 but if you internally broke the screen (the screen is leaking, shows strips, etc) then you need the whole screen replaced it can cost up to $50!

I have the same issue with my iPod. Only half the screen works (right side). I use Zoom, one of the things in the Accessibility settings, to navigate to the left part of the screen where i cannot access. One of the hardest parts of using it that way is typing. Usually, the app doesn't support horizontal view, so i have a somewhat difficult time typing in portrait. If i have to type something large, i use the Notes application because i can write horizontal there, then I paste it over to the app. Most games are unplayable since you need the full screen to play. I can use some games like real racing 3, and Agar.io because both use only one side of the screen. So far, it isn't that bad. I am getting it fixed in 2 weeks so it isn't a bad alternative especially if you need a device to use.

Thank you! The top strip of my screen stopped working and I couldn't use anything because all the Cancel, Done, Post, etc buttons are up there. This is a brilliant workaround.

Yes this is what i have to do until i get my phone fixed. Have a great day!

I seen comments about there being lines on the screen. some one said it was leaking and need to be replace. NOT TRUE! I found an iPhone 5s on a bus bench and the screen was unresponsive, with white lines running vertically .I disassembled the iPhone 5s after getting to the bracket that hid the flex cables I detached them all cleaned them with denatured alcohol and put them back together. The screen worked perfectly. I was then able to return the phone to its proper owner.

I dropped my iPhone 6 and it cracked at the top right corner and across the top of the screen. What has me stuck is that the TOP of my phone works but the bottom is completely unresponsive! I can't even unlock it, but it will let me press the number one and that's all. If you try to press 2 it types 8 instead!? I've already had the screen replaced one and really don't have the money to do it again.. Is there ANY possible easier way to fix my phone, my whole life is on there!! Thanks!!

That is exactly what happened to my 5s before I powered off my phone it was fine but when I turned it back on there were two/three lines and I couldn't even do my password because the numbers were on the right. I'm still looking for help.

That's a teardown, not a screen replacement guide. The guide can be found here.
