Won't accelerate when given gas.

This is an automatic 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE.

Just revs like you're in park and giving it gas. Uphill is a battle to get it over 10mph. Pressing down on gas pedal, it revs, won't accelerate. Checked to be sure the floor mat isn't shoved up under the gas pedal. What can be causing this?

Answer this question I have this problem too

kkhalid, " it revs, won't accelerate." sounds like a transmission problem. One of the most common causes of transmission slip is low automatic transmission fluid. Check the fluid. Other causes are the transmission band is worn out or broken.

I had an issue with my GTP where the transmission control cables were worn, causing extremely slow acceleration until it got to 2nd gear.
