Seagate Momentus 7200 100GB external hard drive not recognized?

I plug it in and I can hear it spinning and clicking but it won't show up on my computer. I've tried it on 2 macs: 1 desktop and one laptop, and one pc: windows 8.

Can I take it apart and tinker with it?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Walter, how do you know this drive is in an external enclosure? Your edit was premature.

How are you plugging it in? Is this a 1 TB drive, please give us the model number. Also the model of the Mac you are trying to use. Did it show up with disk utilities? Is this a new unformatted drive?

It's not new, it's got data on it. It's not in an enclosure it's been removed and I'm using an external power and data device to read harddrives.

It's not showing up at all. Not sure what version of mac matters. Both use latest OS.
