Why can I only use half the storage space?

When I connect my iPod to iTunes, I have only used about 7 gig of space with music, videos and pictures. The rest is taken up by 'other' items colored in orange. Why can't I use the full capacity of this iPod and what is taking up that extra space? How can I empty that extra space?

Chosen Solution

Caleb Splawn, "other" is usually orphaned or corrupt files on the iPod that are no longer readable by the device. A restore will free that space. Make sure that you back up your files first. Hope this helps, good luck.
