I'm running an a1260 Oct 2008 model and my screen has gone black. The back light still gives some luminescence to the display but it's solid black. Also the Apple light on the aluminum side lights up regularly. I hear the disc drive running. Any ideas?

Have you tried connecting your system to an external monitor to see if you even see an image.
Often the GPU's in this series has had problems. Apple did have an extended warrantee for its repair but your time has runout on that and for Apple to even fix this system (end of life'd).
With that said you still can find parts for this system but if the GPU has gone I would think about getting a new system Vs putting the effort in replacing the logic board (good ones are hard to come by now).
