Upgrading my RAM to 8GB, Do I have to buy two 4GB?

My Mac already has 4GB of RAM and I would like to update it to 8GB. Since it has 4GB, I'm wondering if by default it is a 2GB x 2GB or do I need to get 4GB x 4GB?
