Emergency calls only, no sim card inserted

My phone was working fine. Within 5 minutes time it would not allow me to call out. The screen is reading "emergency calls only, no sim card inserted." The sim card is in the phone and had never been taken out. I have taken the sim card out, reinserted it and turned the phone off and back on with no improvement.
