FYI- no such thing as a "PowerBook Pro," you probably mean PowerBook. And as for that it'll depend on what iMac you have, so please idyourmac at the useful link illPod posted.

Shall we bet? This is going to be another orphant here.

Thank you everyone! Yes, my addled brain called it a PowerBook Pro - it's a MacBook Pro ... and, what I actually did was open up the iMac and look at the RAM --- it doesn't match what I removed from my PowerBook. :(

Isn't that always the way!? I really wish manufacturers would use the same connectors for their products - I know they want to sell more but it really gets frustrating to have 10 different cables to connect cameras to computers - chargers for cell phones ... I carry more cables than anything else these days!

May I be so bold to ask - what is an 'orphant' ...

Well RAM comes in three flavors, well actually six, a desktop and a laptop version of DDR1, DDR2 and DDR3. So your MacBook Pro is probably equipped with newer technology, thus DDR3. My iMac and MBP both use DDR3 1066 MHz RAM so its interchangable. Also, recently, Nokia, Motorola and some other companies decided to all use USB A Mini or USB B Micro as their charger/data ports so they don't have to bundle chargers with all their phones and making it all universal.

ram's are changing over time - the capacity "grows", the speed changes - that's why there are always different ram's. an orphant is a topic with no solution and mostly no accepted answer. many users simply don't came back after they got an answer.

Well, this has been very enlightening. I see I still called my MacBook Pro a PowerBook even after correcting myself. I remind my students to read over their work BEFORE submitting it ... I did and I STILL missed it! Well, it makes life interesting.

I will move on now --- am disabling the link for my question. Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to my query.
