My camera application is working and recognizes the picture prior to taking a photo. After taking a photo and storing it in my library, the photo just appears to be black.

This is a rarer issue.
If you can see the picture clearly on the screen prior to taking the picture, then it is something wrong with the system storage. Try resetting the system. To Reset the system you will enter System Settings and then Backup & Reset and you can press on Reset and the system will be resetting to the initial state.
If this does not solve the issue, you may have to replace your system board. This is a LAST CALL REPAIR. Try all other solutions prior to doing this. Follow the System Board replacement guide.
If you can not see anything on your screen when in camera mode, there is a problem with the camera. Try replacing the camera. Follow Camera replacement guide.
