How to backup my data before replacing the hard drive?

Hi,

Is it necessary to copy any files or, is it convenient to backup the old hard drive before i extract it?

I tried to make backup copy on my new (500 GB- 7200) hard drive but its not working. I've an external hard drive that, when I plug it in, it appears in the desk top, not so with this one. I've installed it in the metal box and connect to a USB port and it doesn't show up. I only can find it in finder - disk utility. am I missing some step?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hook up the new external hard drive then go to Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility. Select the drive on the left hand side and select to format it. OSX Extended should be fine. In the options select GUID and give it one partition. Then download the Super Duper and run it. Here's a link to the site: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/

What software have you been using? You should use something simple, such as SuperDuper to easily clone your data.

Might be USB power issue

some portable HDs need a Y-cable to work, '' one side of the Y gives power, one side transfers data. USB ports provide ~400 mA.... per port. a USB y-cable to use 2 ports will give 1000 mA(1 Amp)

Usually these cables are included with cases/drives that require them... but it's possible that the manufacture considered it an option.

The poster is saying that it can be discovered though

Yea - and if discovered should mount, AFAIK the only need to format would be to INSTALL not backup. So to my thinking either there's not enough power to mount it, OR there's directory corruption. N.
