What are points of failure along battery path?

I have a 2012 15" rMBP that had a liquid spill. It is currently experiencing keyboard and battery issues, but it does power up and run properly, particularly if using external keyboard/mouse/display. The battery issue is that the machine doesn't recognize it. The battery icon shows an 'X' through it, and the MagSafe connector only glows amber.

Does anyone know what the circuit for charging the battery "looks" like? Does it share any circuits, traces, or connectors w/ the keyboard along the way? I'd like to check each piece (presumably starting w/ the MagSafe DC-in board) for residue or failure and see if I can get it recognized and charging again.

If you study the guide for your machine you would realize that the keyboard rests almost directly over the battery. Liquid spilled on the keyboard could likely run down onto the battery/keyboard cable connector area. That the power button still works is, IMO, an amazing fluke as they all connect to the logic board almost at the same point.

You're looking at major a DIY project. To replace the top case (unless you're masochistic you don't want to attempt a keyboard only replace) you have to practically dismantle and reassemble the entire machine. So when you get the logic board out you can examine it with a Mark 1 Eyeball & a magnifying glass for corrosion or burned, swollen components.

Thank you for the reply! A couple of points:

1. Actually, the keyboard and the battery are perfectly offset and do not overlap. IOW, the battery goes from the front edge of the palm rest to the bottom edge of the keyboard. The battery does not look to have been contaminated. I believe something else is causing the lack of charging and recognizing the battery.

2. I did pull the logic board and found a "clump" of residue on the top of it, just inboard of the cutout for the left fan (IOW, roughly under the E-R-T keys). I used isopropyl alcohol and a soft toothbrush to remove this residue. Of course, permanent damage may have already been done, but I'd like to know more about the "path" to the battery from the MagSafe connection on down, so that I can best determine what to troubleshoot.

I will try to locate a magnifying glass as you suggest and have a closer look at the area I cleaned. If you or anyone know more about the structure of the battery charging circuitry, I'd be most grateful.
