Screen orientation won't rotate after LCD/digitizer replacement?

Just finished up with a repair for a cracked LCD on my iPhone 5s, and everything seemed to go very well.

I've checked out everything and it all seems to be working quite well, good as new. That is, until I tried to watch a video in landscape mode and my phone would not rotate. Uh-oh.

I've toggled orientation lock on and off, no luck. I've done a reboot (home & power buttons), no luck.

I've checked with compass/level, and they have no functionality when the phone is turned.

I've looked through the teardown but it's not clear to me where the accelerometer/gyroscope is located, but I assume it's on the logic board somewhere. Is this something as simple as a loose cable from the screen to the logic board? Is there anything else I could try besides double-checking cable connections?

Update

As Tom pointed out, the M7 was likely damaged during the operation.

Luckily for me, I took my phone into an Apple Store and described my issue with the phone failing to rotate (no mention of replacing the display). The employee took the phone into the back to inspect it, didn't see anything out of place.

After restoring the phone didn't solve the issue, she decided the phone was defective and since it was covered within the one-year limited warranty, I was issued a brand new phone.

I've been experiencing the same problem. the only difference is that i've never opened my iPhone 5s neither have i ever dropped it. This problem started after the iOS 8 update, And yes i have tried to restore the phone!!

I also have this problem. The interesting part is that when I remove the EMI shield for the display the gyro works like a charm. But when I put it back on gyro doesn't work at all. I was wondering if something could go wrong if I don't put EMI shield back.

BTW the battery seems to drain very fast also it's been replaced recently.

did you put the shield on a magnetic mat?

I have a similar problem with my iphone 5s. Screen unable to rotate, Compass not functioning, Always shows wrong time, bluetooth button not visible. I tried factory reset and restore, but still issue persist. I have never opened my iphone nor dropped it.

Any suggestions to resolve this issue??

The most possible cause is that you damaged the area around M7, which cause all the sensors to die. The M7 is next to the display cables, if you press the tool against the board, you can probably damage it.

Conclusion: never pry the connectors against the board, just lift them.

Thanks Tom. I don't believe I used the board as a lever to get the connectors off, but it seems I must have done something to damage the M7.

This is usually because the rotation lock is turned on.

If the iPhone was previously repaired, whoever did it might have put the screws into the wrong places. Some screws are magnetic so it can mess with the rotation! Useful solutions

After a long while. I finally realized that I had put my phone back together with the wrong screw. When you take your phone apart there is one screw (top right) on the shield that covers the connectors. You will notice that it is not magnetic and it is one of the harder ones to put back in. I'm guessing that I decided to use a magnetic screw because it was easier. This completely screws up the orientation because the tiny little gyroscope gets affected by the magnetism of the screw. It keeps it stationary. Also, when putting the screws back in, do not screw them very tight, that can put unnecessary pressure on the connections.

This worked for me the magnetic screw thing

The gyroscope is a solid-state component, it should not be affected by magnetism.

Oh man you are a genius!

This is a second time when I'm replacing the screen. First screen replacement was a cheap ripoff, but this second one is genuine Apple part.

When the first replacement job was done, I noticed that rotating problem. I was obviously unable to pinpoint where the fault was, and about week after I broke the (shi*ty pirate) screen again.

Few weeks went and I ordered a better, genuine screen and hoped that will work better. It doesn't.

So I (praise the Lord) found this.

I opened the focker again and noticed that the right corner of the plate was empty (I screwed up a one screw on the floor and didn't bother to find it). So my conclusion was that the plate was magnetised (how to spell that) or you just misname the corner. Same to me because I detach the whole plate, an now it works!

Think that the plate is not important because those plugs are quite tight.

Thank you mister.

Oh, my God, thanks iamthesmythe. I changed my iphone 5s' battery and I thought everything had gone right. Days later I came to find out that the motion sensor wasn't working at all and I thought I had damaged the m7 sensor. Then I found this and got it to work. Thanks a lot.

Thank god for you. Worked a treat!

I have had this issue twice after screen replacement. After doing a system update it was fixed on the first one, the second one did not fix itself after and update. I have no clue what the reason is, but I doubt it is a hardware issue. However, for your safest option, make sure you unplug the battery before you mess with any future connections just in case it is a hardware/short issue.

I also had an issue with my accelerometer not working after I replaced the screen. I fixed it by putting the non-magnetic screw in the top right corner. Worked like a charm!!

Thanks guys!

on what corner? the screen or the m7 ?

This one must be a non-magnetic screw:

And if it doesnt work, do like I did: unscrew the whole plate.

Have just noticed these posts while looking for help on Proximity sensor+ Front camera not working after screen replacement on iPhone 5S. Is the motion sensor= proximity sensor? In this case, might the problem of the magnetic screw apply to my problem?

I have tried 3 times reconnecting the sensor+camera, making sure they fit in tightly (screen came with the proper plastic/metal holders), have checked that the small rubber boot is present too. Have done a hard reset. No luck so far.

Any suggestion?

Changing the top-right screw on the connector cover fixed the problem.

Simpliest solution guys is to re-open your iphone 5s and just loosen the 4 screws securing the LCD cables. Perhaps, you just tightened the screws too much like I did. That simply solved this problem.
