The cd drive has worked on occasion but has failed to read the cd most of the time. Often it will reject the cd after a bit of time. I have tried many cd, new and old with the same result.

Sounds like it's failing. If you feel able you could DIY replace... get the required tools (every job is easier when you use the proper tool) order the part, study (not just read/look at) the Guide.

The more complete the description of your problem is (what iMac 27 you're referencing - there are many versions going back years, what OS you're using -there's a lot of those too, what Application you're using there are many, a full compete description, the text or screen shot of any error messages) the more assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it..
