Top and bottom of frame is bent outwards

My stepson's mom just got this iPhone 4 for him used and when it wouldn't stay connected to the charger I started looking at it and the top and bottom of the aluminium frame is bent outwards.

The phone is fully functional otherwise, it charges fine if the connector is pushed against it, just seems like the frame is preventing a proper connection.

Is this simply the frame that is bent, or could some internal problem be causing this?

No it wouldn't be the frame it's most likely charging port that's faulty could could try picking dust and dirt out of it to see if it makes any difference..

This iphone has obviously been involved in a very nasty smash sometime in the past which has damaged the chassis. If you take it apart you'll probably find the screen/back have been replaced before. Looking at your pictures yes the frame will be stopping the charger going all the way in.

Best option would be to get a new chassis/frame for it and fit it.
