How do I force start from CD?

My MacBook Pro won't boot up to the OS. I get the opening chime which then goes to the apple on screen, but then it goes all grey and gives me the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." This is as far as I can go. I have tried booting from a CD to no avail. What can I do?

You need to ask your own question on this one as you seem to have other issues.

Perhaps the OS disk is too old for the Powerbook?
