When I try to boot the computer it ends up showing a black screen with a single blinking white block on the top left of the screen. I've tried to reinstall windows but the install software cannot find the hard drive. The lights and fan come on, but they don't take any commands.

Hi Nick, it sounds like you may have a hard drive failure on your hands. This is usually caused by old age or excessive movement dislodging parts inside the hard drive. Seeing as your Windows installation software can't find the hard drive, I recommend installing a new hard drive. Check out the hard drive installation guide in the troubleshooting pagefor the dv5.
