Why,when on battery, does the computer turn off?

When on battery alone, the computer signals low on charge and turns off when the charge, as shown by the menu bar at the top right of the screen when I plug the computer back in, is still 85%.

Try using Coconut Battery to see if the issue has to do with the health of your battery.

Another way to do this is to go to System Profiler and go to Power and under that it should say if your battery needs to be serviced.

Usually in this case, the battery is too old and it won't hold a significant charge anymore.

Thank you. I downloaded Coconut Battery. Result: 91% original capacity; 100% charged and 35 months old.

I unhooked the Mac and it went dead after 17 minutes, the battery was at 94% charge. It has now been reconnected for > 24 hours and is still 94%. Does this sound like a computer problem or a battery problem?

Thats really weird.. To help isolate the problem, try using another battery in the laptop, then try to use the original battery on another MacBook Pro.
