Black screen pinging sound when on charge.

Hi,

I recently managed to revive my daughter's water damaged iPhone 5, but it was suffering with intermittent signal problems and after replacing the screen, it wasn't responsive all the time.

I bought another iPhone 5 that had a damaged logic board, but "all the other parts worked".

Using the guides here, I removed my daughters logic board and put it in this other phone.

Now it won't turn on, and when plugged into the charger, it just pings every few seconds. The screen does not light up.

I thought that I might have damaged the screen flex cable, but both the screens I have, have been tested on another phone and they both still work. I have slao tried both batteries in the phone but still no luck.

I am going to strip it down again, but apart from the screen connector and the battery connector is there anything else I should be looking for?

Stuart, water damage is the toughest of repair since one never knows which components have failed. In your case you at least know your LCD is working. That would leave the backlight coil, backlight IC and the filters on the logic board. These parts are very small and will require a great deal of practice to solder. If you think you would like to tackle this kind of job, post a couple images of your logic board so we can point the components out to you. I would need a good picture on the LCD connector and just below it. there are three small components that you could check as well. sorry, I do not have a good image of that particular area.

Block Image

L3 is a 22UH-20%-0.38A-0.876OHM VLF302510T-SM coil

D1 is a NSR0620P2XXG diode is a SOD-923-HF package

U23 is a LM3534TMX-A1 backlight IC

Also, when you clean your board, make sure that you remove the EMI shields.

Hi there a pinging noise mean the the display is damage but saying as you have used two working screens then the problem could be on the lcd connectors on the motherboard itself

I have looked at the connectors, and they were slightly corroded in one area, so I have cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner, but it has made no difference.

It's because of your logic board.

When it comes to water damage, it's nearly impossible to have everything salvageable without a new logic board.

Does the phone produce a lot of heat without the screen being on?

Dylon,

What puzzles me is that the logic board and screen were working before I put them in the other phone body. I can only assume that I have damaged something while transferring the logic board to the other phone.

Like I said in the previous posts, I have cleaned any corrosion off the contacts, tried both batteries I have and both screens. The only thing I haven't done is put the original rear facing camera back on the logic board, but I wouldn't think that the camera could cause this issue.
