Battery drain after screen replacement

I recently replaced my iPhone 5s digitizer/screen and everything works fine but now it seems like the battery drains almost 2x as fast as it did before the screen was changed. I can't figure out what exactly could be wrong and reopened the phone to see if there as anything loose or disconnected but everything looks fine and functions correctly.

Answer this question I have this problem too

So after much significant frustration I found that software issues were to blame surrounding the iOS 7.1 release that occurred around the time of my screen replacement. It wasn't a short in the hardware it ended up being processes running constantly. Under settings my usage and standby were almost identical times. No typical fix helped because the corruption was in my backup as well. I only fixed it after a factory restore and setting it up as a new phone. But the upside is the screen is fine and was not the cause of the battery drain.

Check that the brightness didn't get turned up.

from dimmest to brightest setting wouldn't double the battery drain, and it's actually draining with minimal to no use. I can leave it alone for 2 hours and lose 20-30% battery.

Paul it sounds like you may have a short with the battery somewhere. You should open your phone back up and inspect to make sure all connections are good and make sure there isn't a short somewhere or possibly an area touching. If you find out anything else please let us know and we will assist as soon as possible

Haven't resolved the issue as of yet. But I do agree that some sort of short is very likely. Especially with all the other typical battery drain issues having been tested(brightness, bluetooth, background app refresh, Etc... Not convinced it isn't the replacement screen though. If there was a minor short in the cabling it could still cause current drain even if the battery cables are fine. Parasitic drain could likely come from many parts of the phone if there was a short within a given component.

When you had to replace your digitizer screen was it just because the front glass was shattered or the entire display itself? If you still have it and you can plug that back in we may be able to crack the riddle if its the screen draining the battery or if its an actual short itself.

Feel for heat on the board---this may help localize a short.

I replaced my screen and digitizer. While I wasas plugging the ribbon cables back from the digitizer to logic board one of the ribbons weren't aligned and I must have shorted something. I smelt something burning and small puff. Any ways I realigned everything and noticed the full battery half dropped to have the charge on screen. My first mistake was not disconnecting the battery. Ever since the battery dies very quickly barely lasting 8 hrs. I've ordered a new battery hoping it was the battery I shorted and nothing else.?

Hi,

I dropped my phone in water but quickly took it apart and dried it and it is working almost perfectly now except I have the same problem. I even replaced the battery but even with the new one it won't hold a charge. I didn't replace any other parts. I'm still looking for a solution as well.

I replaced a screen on a 5c and then had the same "heating" issue and battery drain. I suspected it was a short somewhere, so I dismantled the iPhone again. On doing so I noticed that the three connectors on the new LCD didn't have the small foam pads on them as per the original LCD. So I transferred the foam pads from the original screen onto the new one and re-assembled. The iPhone is now fine. I assume the foam pads are some sort of spacer to prevent the three connectors from touching.

This advice from Paul actually works! Thank you Paul, you saved my phone! I had a screen replaced on a iPhone 6, and straight after heat issues and battery drain even on flight mode and simple apps were killing the battery as well, I opened the phone and saw that the new screen connectors has no pads, even on the battery as I changed battery too, the guy from the shop(u.k.junction8 on m20 services) even forgot to put back the bracket which is covering the three connectors.

Thanks for my moms water damaged phone was in the draw, I could reuse the bracket and the foam pads. The seller even destroyed the home button gasket by removing it the worst way, my home button was clumsy as !&&*! How many people had this issue and went mad? How many phone shop neglected this thing and gave back phones with battery drains to their customers? I haven't really seen any solution in the internet that's why I am greatfull to find this useful solution on ifixit!

Thank you ifixit! And again! Thank you Paul!!

I had my screen replaced today, iPhone 4 (yes, it is old) but now the battery is draining really fast. Is there any way the company that I paid to replace the broken screen went behind my back and did a battery swap for my good battery? And how can I check to see if the battery in my phone is the same battery from when I bought it?

Im starting to think this is what happened to me. I figured maybe the repair guy messed it up on purpose so that I could call him back for another repair. Someone else suggested that maybe the digitizer he used either has more pixels or requires more power to run. Im not sure if thats a possibility but I paid $145 about two weeks ago and I would hate to have to spend more money to repair the battery!! Please help

by

That's pretty doubtful. Batteries are cheap, and no repair guy wants customers coming back frustrated. I had the same issue replacing the screen myself. For me, a metal bit had broken off and was causing a short. (Answer below)

I'm having this problem after replacement of screen on iPhone 6. When I look at battery usage in settings it say ms Home & Lock Screen are using 72% of power. This must be the issue. Any help out there?

Check for loose metal that might be causing a short somewhere!

I was having the same issue after replacing the screen on my iPhone 5c for the second time. Hot phone, quick battery drain, plus a sometimes erratic touchscreen.

Turns out the screw anchor for the bottom left plate that goes over the three points where the lcd connects to the phone had broken loose, and was making contact with the surrounding area - which is where my phone was getting hot. I removed the loose piece, put the everything back together, and everything went back to normal!

Update:

Here's a picture showing which screw base snapped off:

Fixing the loose bit DID solve the erratic screen behavior, but my battery still drains pretty fast, even after replacing the battery. So that didn't actually fix it. Sorry all. No luck yet :*(

Had my screen replaced on my 5s due to cracked screen. 24hrs later I update to the new iOS, it turns off and never turns back on! Started getting really hot so I thought I'd replace the battery. Still no life but still gets really hot when the power button has been held down. Thinking of replacing the screen again. Didn't notice anything unusual when I changed the battery, ie lose screws, etc.

I know nothing about electronics really but am having the same problem. Could it be the digitizer? Mine gets hot and the battery drains fast. When I replaced the screen I also replaced the digitizer as well. It looked easier and my son did it for me.
