Why is gas mixing in oil in 2004 Kohler CV740s engine?

when it cranked up it blew gas and oil out the breather on the valve cover approx 6 feet and leaked down on the muffler and caught on fire. I put it out but don't understand what caused it. How do I repair it?

How did you have the engine stored? Did your recently transport it. Check your float valve and see if it is stuck open.

No it was in my carport since last fall and I went to crank it and it blowed gas out of the valve cover about 6 feet and dripped down on the mufler and caught on fire. And I mean a big fire put a lot of water on it to put it out. But i am afraid to try it again without knowing what caused it. My oil case also has about gal. of gas in the oil. don't know if it might be intake crack or head craked or something else? Thanks, Charley

See if the freeze plugs are blown out or bulging out.

frankly, I'd start by draining all the fluids (oil and fuel) Check your fuel lines, gas tank, air filter. Change your spark plugs and set your valve clearance. You may also consider a leak down test to see if you have a stuck intake valve which could be causing this. Check your float valve and make sure it is not stuck, as well as your float level. You can get the service manual for your engine from here.
