when turning on the PowerBook, i only get a white screen. i can hook up an external monitor and seen everything. When the startup cycle finishes, the display dims a bit. Is the display toast?

I am far more suspicious of the cable from the logic board to the LCD but it could be the LCD. The fact that you have a good picture on the external monitor would lead me to believe your logic board is good. Check out the cable carefully before replacing the LCD. Good luck Ralph
