How to transfer data" login , admin and all other data"

I'm getting ready to replace my emc 2308 21.5" intel iMac from a 500gb seagate hd to a 2tb seagate hd. how do i transfer all my existing data to the new 2tb hard drive so when i install the new drive and turn it on its ready to go with the existing data from the previous drive .

do i need to clone the new drive.

this computer came with snow leopard os and has been upgraded to 10.9.2

I'm new at this never upgraded a mac hd.

please help

Options

Plug in your old Mac using a Firewire cable. Boot it up holding down the "T" key to put it into Target Mode. The hard drive icon should show up on your new machine. Use Migration assistant to move all your apps and user data.
