cpu changeout, is it the cpu or motherboard?

I am a Mac newby by need of having run an old program on OS 9. I got a MDD, and after about a week, it will no longer start up. The light on the start button flashes, but nothing happens. I tried changing the the power supply, and that did not help, so I assume it is a bad motherboard or CPU. Any way to tell which? Last, what is the trick to release the CPU board from the motherboard? I have been checking this site, and have not found it. Thanks.

First, replace the 3.6 volt PRAM battery and see if your problem has vanished.

I did that...matter of fact a guy "Mac superstore lead me astray"; when trying a different battery did not help, he said it was the power supply. I then rewired an ATX power supply to use on the MDD per youtube video. Now I have to undo that!

My computer is working again. I found a reset button on the motherboard. I also found out the hard way that an ATX power supply can be used

if it is wired to the MDD harness.
