iPhone 4s All calls inaudible, can anyone suggest why please?

Dear all,

My iPhone 4s is distorting cellular call audio, sometimes making loud screeches at the receiving end or just silence with the odd little noise. The strange thing is, I know the microphone is ok as Voice Memos work perfectly, and the speaker plays my music/voicemails etc. without any problems. I'm also able to make FaceTime audio calls and clearly send and receive the audio.

My question is, what should I replace to get the phone working properly again? Any helpful suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Greg

I would try replacing the lower mic that is connected to the dock so a dock change is what you need maybe..

Voice memos and FaceTime use the top mic which is connected to the power button top mic is not used during calls the bottom 1 is..

Hmm thanks Con - I didn't mention in my original post, my power button is permanently depressed and doesn't work either - so perhaps this is a clue given what you're saying.

If your doing the repair yourself I would change both there inexpensive parts and you eliminate the troubleshooting if it still doesn't work

I'll do that then, thanks con…It also has a broken display which I had previously purchased the replacement for but not installed as yet as I was waiting until it was unusable, so it's look's like I'm in for a bit of a rebuild.

Yea mate bit of a build ahead of you make sure when changing the power button flex you have the screen removed first some people make the mistake of bending back the flex to get at screws and end up damaging the cables..

I got as far as putting the logic board back in and noticed that one of the ribbons from the display was not sticking out far enough and so had to take it all to bits again to see what the problem was. When I had re-stripped out the logic board, speaker assembly, vibrator etc. I could see that the digitizer cable from the new screen was slightly folded, which accounted for it's shortness. I unfolded it and put the whole thing back together, , however when I finally got the case back on and powered up I found that the screen didn't work at all. I had sucessfully fixed the power button and dock connector, as both of those work just fine, but not response from from the touch-screen at all. So I re-openen the case and re-seated the two ribbons for the digitiser and screen data, which went on satisfactorily enough I thought, but having put it all back together again still nothing from the touch screen.

If anybody has any suggestions for something else I could check I'd be very appreciative.

Greg
