It's been asked before, but every single answer is "put it to sleep" or "ctrl+shft+ejct". None of those have helped. (Sleep mode worked once, but the stripes came back when I adjusted the brightness.)
I'd like to try fixing it before replacing the screen, but I need more technical info. Does anyone know what typically causes this, and which components I should check? Is a home-fix even possible?

It is possible that you have TAB errors on your LCD. Post an image of your screen display with your question. Also, before replacing anything, attach an external monitor to your computer and see what it displays.

Try reseating all the connectors. If that doesn't fix it, replace the logic board.
