Why does the tray stop half way on boot-up?

I'm working on fixing a 2013 Xbox 360 Slim that has a Hitachi-LG optical drive. The only problem I'm having with it is that, usually, the first time I try to eject the tray after starting the console, it will stop half way, wait a few seconds, then close, as if it were calibrating the tray position. Afterwards, it will open and close normally, but re-calibrate after the next time the console is shut off. Is there anything I can do to get it to open properly all the time?
