Is it normal for the disc drive to be noisy occasionally?

I just replaced my disc drive with one purchased here at iFixit and it is occasionally quite noisy. As a test of the device I have been importing a couple of hundred music discs into my library while I'm working. Sometimes the drive makes a lot of noise as the disc spools up. Other times it's quiet as a mouse. Is this normal?

I've never run a couple of hundred disk through at one time but my bet is that the store bought disks are quit and the burned disks are noisy.

Thanks mayer. To clarify though, all of these discs are store bought.

It can take longer to load unclean disks. You know ones with explicit words ;-). Also some disks just don't read as well as others.

I have ripped hundreds of discs in the past -- all store-bought (or virtual store) -- and I have experienced the same occasional noisiness. I've no idea if this is due to small variance in the spindle holes for some CDs, or if the seating is just off a little bit, but I would not be concerned unless there was a consistent pattern of loud noises from every or most disks.

One question: If you reintroduce the same CD or DVD that was noisy before, is it noisy again? That is, is the noise consistent for a given disk? Or is more random?

Oops! It came up towards the top as I was browsing, and I thought the Answer was ... incomplete. I'll pay more attention to timestamps and try to focus more on timeliness. Thanks for your feedback.
